The United Nations Development Programme in Romania

Established in 1971, the UNDP Country Office in Bucharest was the first UNDP field office to function in a former Warsaw Pact member state. It wasn't until two decades later that other offices opened in the neighboring countries of the former Socialist bloc.

Based on more than three decades of experience in Romania, UNDP is currently implementing the 2005-2009 Country Programme. Anchored around Romania’s MDGs, it responds to the key challenges of reform and EU accession.

UNDP draws on its reputation for neutrality and integrity to help Romania grasp new opportunities, while alleviating some of the disruptions caused by the transition to the free market and the accession to the European Union in 2007.

We are helping the country build a functional and participatory democratic government by developing a more accountable public administration.

As a general practice, UNDP identifies disparities and areas of vulnerability in human development, demonstrates local-level solutions to these challenges, and follows-up by expanding the scale of these solutions and mainstreaming them into national government programmes.

United Nations Development Programme Around the World

As the UN's global development network, UNDP has the proven technologies, policies, financial resources, and most importantly, the courage and determination to make things happen. UNDP has emerged as an organization of energy and intellect, of shared knowledge and strong partnerships, of realistic vision for transformation.

Today, with knowledge management, a growing culture of corporate social responsibility, and equipped with a series of cutting-edge tools for doing business, our global network of experts is more prepared than ever to support people in need. UNDP is committed to full use of everything it offers: advocacy, knowledge, partnerships, and support for capacity development.

As a trusted development partner known worldwide for being on the ground during both crisis and peace, we adapt and extend our capabilities when events demand it. We are on the ground in more than 166 countries, working with them on their own solutions to global and national development challenges. Through its country offices, UNDP addresses five critical issues: human and economic development, nation building, sustainable resources and the environment, infectious diseases; and conflicts and natural disasters. Often these challenges are interlinked, reinforcing each other. UNDP designs programmes and partnerships in response to this interdependence.
